高郵有7000多年文明史和2243年建城史。史稱江左名區(qū)、廣陵首邑，為帝堯故里、堯文化發(fā)祥地，是江淮文明、郵文化重要區(qū)域。早在7000年前，先民們就在這里刀耕火種，繁衍生息。秦王嬴政于公元前223年在此筑高臺(tái)、置郵亭，故名高郵，別稱秦郵，華夏一郵邑，神州無同類，是中國唯一以郵命名城市。
